The 1950's were a very interesting time, and I think it would have been much more interesting to live in that decade. For instance, television just became popular during that time period. Now, probably about 99% of people have them and don't think twice. Back then, there was no computers like the one I'm typing on now, there was typewriters and not much else. I feel like it would be so refreshing to live in such a conservative time. But now, everyone always has their heads buried in their phones, and technology has gone so far it's ridiculous to think that only 60 years ago no one knew what a "cell phone" was, let alone an Ipad or a DVD player. It would be so cool to live in a time where everyone had hobbies, such as sports, and hanging out with you friends. I also found it pretty cool that Barbie's were invented in the 1950's.
I've always thought about the fact that it would be so difficult in general to live back then with lack of technology. But once, my mother said "that's all we had when we were children, and one day your kids will ask you if it was boring when you were a kid with your lack of technology" and I found that so interesting, how everything evolves so quickly.
I found out that fashion in the 50's was very modest. Would wear nice button up dresses, women's hair was normally short in tight curls, and over all everything just looked elegant.
Men normally wore suits or plaid button ups. But all of this fashion was more for adults. Teenage boys wore varsity jackets, leather, etc. while normally having their hair slicked back. they went for a cool look but it looked very clean. Girls not only wore dresses, but also skirts, and cardigans! I find it so appealing that people wore that kind of stuff back then, but now most girls wear skin tight clothing that isn't very appropriate for their age, and most teenage boys wear their jeans too low. I would have much preferred fashion back then.
Finally, music. in the 50's music seemed to be more fun, music you could dance to and have a lot of fun with. the 50's was definitely the decade for Elvis, it was the first time anyone had every had 9 songs in the top 100! back then they sang about things that make you happy, things that make you enjoy life and want to get up and dance. It's petty much the opposite today. Most of the songs you hear on the radio are slow pop songs with singers singing about their problems. and I think that's the problem. Most music now adays is all the same, but back then they had things like doo-wop and jazz music. I just feel like its way more tasteful than the music now.
In the end I learned that the 50's were very different from now. I don't think there are many similarities to now. But the 50's was definitely impressive.
